Distance Learning Strategies for Sensemaking Webinar

When: October 21, 2020
Time: 1:00PM CDT

School is underway in most parts of the country. Whether you are teaching in the classroom, distance-learning environment, or combination of the two, our goal remains the same – provide ALL our students opportunities and access to science learning. In this web seminar, participants will experience distance-learning strategies that support all students in actively trying to figure out how the world works, or “sensemaking”, in the context of a NSTA Daily Do lesson. We’ll reflect on the four critical aspects of sensemaking and leverage digital tools, likely familiar to your students, in innovative ways to support collaborative engagement in the science and engineering practice to build understanding of science ideas needed to explain how or why phenomena occur.

Speakers:

Tricia Shelton, Director of Professional Learning and Standards Implementation, NSTA

Tricia Shelton worked with Kentucky students for 22 years as a middle school and high school science teacher and teacher leader. Tricia is a 2014 NSTA Distinguished Teaching Award winner for her contributions to and demonstrated excellence in science teaching. Tricia has joined the NSTA team as the Director of Professional Learning and Standards Implementation, supporting educators and students across the county as they work to integrate contemporary research in science education into classroom teaching and learning.

Kate Soriano,
Standards Implementation Specialist, NSTA

Kate Soriano began her career as a geologist for the EPA’s Superfund program. Her work explaining science to affected communities made her realize many people do not have access to a high-quality science education and she wanted to change that. She now has more than 20 years of experience teaching K–12 students science in both formal and informal educational settings. Kate currently works as the Standards Implementation Specialist for NSTA, supporting teachers in implementing the NGSS and other three-dimensional standards based on A Framework for K-12 Science Education.
