Guide to Chemical Hazards
(Article #2)

One of the first things a science supervisor needs to do when following the safety requirements of the OSHA Laboratory Standard (29CFT part 1910 Subpart Z) is to classify hazardous chemicals. A chemical inventory of all potential hazards must be conducted and documented. There are many computer inventory programs available from commercial vendors. One of the most credible resources is provide by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards is a source of general industrial hygiene information. This guide contains approximately 700 chemical profiles. It is a quick and relatively complete reference guide that science supervisors should have in their safety library. Individual copies of the guide are free from NIOSH at the following address: NIOSH Publications, 4676 Columbia Parkway, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45226-1998.
