Outstanding Leadership in Science Education Award
Dr. Nancy Kellogg
Dr. Nancy Kellogg, science education consultant, is the recipient of the 2008 Outstanding Leadership in Science Education Award. The award consists of a $1,000 check and plaque from Pearson and a one-year membership in NSELA. The Outstanding Leadership in Science Education Award, sponsored by NSELA and Pearson, is to honor an outstanding member who leads a school, school district, region, state, or the nation in science education. This is our way of acknowledging the outstanding contributions made to improve science education and teaching. The OLISE award was presented during the Annual National Science Teachers Association meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, at a reception held in Dr. Kellogg’s honor, on Wednesday March 26, 2008 in Lighthouse 1 of the Seaport Hotel.
Dr. Kellogg has made many contributions to science education at the local, state, national and international levels. She has set stellar standards for science education leadership. Dr. Kellogg is a 40-year veteran of the education profession, and her service to science education has been outstanding. She is a strong supporter of inquiry-based science. Dr. Kellogg has inspired hundreds of teachers to love science and to present science using the inquiry method. Thousands of students have been affected as a result of her efforts. Dr. Kellogg has been a science supervisor, consultant on a variety of National Science Foundation funded projects, project director, science specialist, high school science teacher, and college professor and assistant professor for 3 years at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
She has served as President of NSELA, President of the Colorado Science Supervisors Association, NSTA Board Member, Co-Chair of NSELA’s Colorado Summer Leadership Institute, Co-Chair of the Program Committee-Denver’s NSTA Regional Convention and Chair of the Colorado Science Education Network.
Dr. Kellogg has served on numerous committees including the NSTA College Science Teaching Committee and the NSTA Task Force on Committee and Board Operations. She has served on the Advisory Board for WestEd’s Science and Mathematics Leadership Academy, McREL High Plains Consortium, Project Learn II through the National Center for Atmospheric Research, Colorado’s College Integrated Sciences Teacher Enhancement Project, AAAS/MacArthur Higher Education Science Teacher Induction Project, and Earth and Space Science Technological Education Project, among others. She has also made numerous presentations at local, state, national and international conferences. Dr. Kellogg is also the recipient of several national awards.

2008 NSELA/Kendall Hunt
Outstanding Administrator Support Award
Dr. Raymond J. Bandlow
Dr. Raymond J. Bandlow, Superintendent of Schools, Hillside, New Jersey, has been selected as the recipient of the 2008 Kendall Hunt/NSELA Outstanding Administrator Support Award (OASA). This award is given annually to an administrator who has made outstanding contributions in supporting science education in our nation’s schools. Dr. Bandlow received the award during 2008 National Science Teachers Association Convention in Boston, Massachusetts, at a reception given by Kendall Hunt in his honor in the Westin Waterfront Hotel, Thursday, March 27, 2008. The award consists of a $1,000 check and plaque from Kendall-Hunt Publishing Company. It also includes a one-year membership in the National Science Education Leadership Association. NSELA administers the awards program.
Dr. Bandlow has set a clear course for science education improvement for the Hillside School District where he has been superintendent for the past seven years. During his tenure as superintendent of the Hillside Public Schools, Dr. Bandlow has been committed to improving science education for the students in his district. He represents a total commitment and dedication to science education locally and throughout the nation. He has mentored and supported many novice leaders and leadership teams from school districts across the United States. Dr. Bandlow underlines the importance of understanding the critical attributes and essential ingredients to lead science education reform efforts.
Dr. Bandlow has been a catalyst for bringing $7.1 million in National Science Foundation funds to the Hillside Public Schools District. He presently serves as a Co-Principal Investigator for a comprehensive science and mathematics program, which provides extensive professional development and in-class support to teachers of mathematics and sciences in grades 6-8. The consortium includes Merck Institute for Science Education, four school districts, Kean University, and the Educational Testing Service. Additionally, Merck Institute for Science Education has contributed an additional one million dollars.
After several years at National Science Resources Center (NSRC), Dr. Bandlow chose to return to a school district superintendent position in Hillside Public Schools where he could be intimately involved in guiding his staff to support the needs of the students. He used the experience and knowledge gained while working at the national level to make a difference in his school district. Data collected by Dr. Bandlow and his staff show a marked improvement in student achievement in science and math during his tenure.
Dr. Bandlow is actively engaged and holds office in several organizations. He is President Elect of the Urban Superintendents Association Executive Board, President of the Union County Superintendents' Roundtable, and Charter Member and currently on the Board of Directors of the Invention Factory Science Center. Dr. Bandlow serves as a member of the faculty for the National Science Resources Center’s Strategic Planning Institutes.
