Announcing a Call for Book Chapters Science Education Leadership for the 21st Century

The National Science Education Leadership Association (NSELA) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) are calling for submission of book chapters for possible publication in Science Education Leadership in the 21st Century. The focus of this volume is to provide a forum for exchanging ideas about, identifying emerging trends in, learning new approaches to, and examining various ways to cultivate a leadership network to implement science education reform at all levels of the education system.

We are looking for book chapters that explore applications of science education leadership in support of innovation and change in such areas as science teaching and learning, professional development, science curriculum and assessment. The call is for chapters from teachers, practitioners, academics and others that describe and illustrate some aspect of the relationship between the display of science education leadership and the implementation of science education reform. The goal is for all students to achieve at the highest levels of scientific literacy. Science leadership extends from science teachers to the highest levels of government. Therefore, chapter submissions from all key players are encouraged. This book will serve as a valuable tool for teachers, administrator, professional development coordinators, higher education faculty and policy makers.

Proposed themes/topics of the contributions include, but are not restricted to:

  • Science leadership practices that foster and encourage innovation and/or creativity in a variety of environments and contexts;
  • The role of teacher leadership in science education reform;
  • Leadership that expands effective science education programs in school districts and states;
  • Leadership that promotes a variety of teaching styles that emphasize constructivist approaches, including differentiated instruction and cooperative learning;
  • Leadership that promotes collaboration and partnership among various levels of the education system, including school districts, higher education and state policy makers;
  • Leadership that actively involve teachers in the decision making for professional development programs, curriculum changes, and other activities that affect their practice;
  • Leadership that ensures the development and /or selection of standards-based science curriculum;
  • The role of science leadership in keeping good science teachers;
  • Examining the leadership role of the principal in science education;
  • Leadership behaviors: Implications for key players in science education
  • Leadership that promotes the use of a variety of qualitative and quantitative assessments for curriculum improvement, instructional improvement, and enhanced student learning; and
  • Leadership that builds public awareness of science education.
Submission guidelines and timelines:

Please submit by email an abstract of 500-1000 words by December 10, 2008. Authors will be notified of the outcome of the proposed abstracts. Upon acceptance of the abstract, author will be invited to submit full chapters of between 5000 and 6000 words by April 15, 2009.

All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind basis by subject experts. The book is scheduled to be published by NSTA Press and will be a publication of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and the National Science Education Leadership Association (NSELA).

More Information for Authors

  1. Manuscripts must be typed double-spaced. Figures, tables, and charts must be submitted in camera-ready condition. Tables should be typed on separate pages at the end of the manuscript. Submitted articles should not exceed fifteen pages (doubled-spaced).
  2. The first page of the manuscript should contain the article title, author’s name, affiliation, and address to which correspondence and proofs should be sent. The author should not place his/her name on the other manuscript pages so that anonymity can be maintained during the review process. All manuscripts will undergo a peer review process.
  3. Manuscripts must not have been published elsewhere. However, new ideas and techniques, which have been described in publications, may be used provided credit is given to author (s) or source (s).
  4. Manuscripts must be concisely written. They should contain adequate information, basic facts, and clear directions for the intended audience to follow or use in the profession. It is important to maintain coherence of thought.
  5. References cited in the manuscript should contain accurate and complete information. The list of references at the back should be in alphabetical order by last name of first author.   6. Receipt of abstracts and manuscripts will be acknowledged. Authors will be notified by the Editor regarding the recommendations on publication of the manuscript. Transfer of the author’s copyright to the National Science Education Leadership Association and the National Science Teachers Association is a condition for publication of all manuscripts.
