Position Papers Committee Chair
Appointed, one-year term.
Major function or purpose of office:
To develop the "rough draft" of appropriate position statements.
Other Duties:
Serves as a member of the Executive Committee.
May appoint individuals to serve on the Position Papers Committee for a period that will not exceed one year. These appointments will have to be made yearly (and the Position Papers Chair is not obligated to appoint the same individuals).
Review each year, the existing Position Statements to determine if they should be updated or modified.
Collect recommendations from science educators to determine if new position statements should be developed.
Participate in at least one open forum at a convention or conference that involves science educators to collect data concerning science problems and/or concerns.
Be responsible for developing a position statement for areas that are chaired by other Executive Committee members (if requested to do so) or if a need for a position statement in one of these areas is determined.
Distribute a draft of a newly developed position statement to the President of NSELA and at least two other members of the Executive Board so they can provide a critique.
Affirm that all statements in a newly developed position statement are accurate.
Revisit the draft of all newly developed position statements after receiving input from at least three members of the Executive Board. Make appropriate modifications and have the newly developed document ready to be presented to the Executive Board for approval during the yearly spring meeting.
Procedures:
The need for a specific position statement is identified.
Time lines are developed.
The rough draft of the position statement is developed by the Position Papers Committee.
A rough draft is submitted to the Executive Director for distribution to members of the Executive Board.
Comments from members of the Executive Board are submitted to the chair of the Position Papers Committee.
Using comments received, the original draft is modified and then submitted again to the Executive Director.
The modified position statement is distributed to the members of the Executive Committee and a vote is taken.
Note: The vote can be accomplish by "write in" ballots. If everyone is comfortable with the modified position statement, it is approved. If a member of the Executive Board would like a discussion of a statement (or section) then the Executive Director will attempt to remedy the situation. If this is not possible, the discussion and the voting process will take place during a formal Executive Board meeting.
If more than one member of the Executive Board would like to discuss any part of the modified position statement, this will take place (along with the final voting process) during a formal Executive Board meeting.

Public Relations Committee Chair
Appointed position, one year term.
Major function or purpose of office:
Coordinates the public relations initiatives for the Association.
Other Duties:
Serves as a member of the Executive Committee.
Appoints public relations personnel to provide assistance marketing and publicizing the Association, as needed.
Collaborates with the President and the Executive Director in promoting the Association.
Solicits assistance from the Executive Committee and the membership to improve and enhance communications.
Assists the Executive Committee in advertising through various publications.
Ensures that each promotion intended for the membership is carefully edited for accuracy, printed, and mailed in the most economical manner possible.
Develops programs to promote and advertise items for the Association
Conducts other duties as outlined in the Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws of the Association.

Publications Committee Chairperson
Appointed by the President annually
Major function or purpose of office:
Coordinates the publication of the NSELA journal The Science Educator and works with NSTA to publish other science leadership books such as the Sourcebook.
Other Duties:
Serves as a member of the Executive Committee.
Chairs the Review Committee for articles published for the Association.
Selects Association members to serve on the Review Committee.
Establishes and maintains forms and records for reviewing.
Prepares an annual summary of all reviews for the Executive Committee.
Recommends to the Executive Committee articles that should be published.
Journal Chair:
Appoints the Editorial Board for the Science Educator.
Prepares manuscript guidelines for potential authors.
Prepares a call for manuscripts for potential authors.
Publishes manuscript guidelines and the call for manuscripts.
Disseminates manuscript guidelines and the call for manuscripts at NSTA conventions.
Receives and processes all manuscripts for the Science Educator.
Screens manuscripts before they are sent to the Editorial Board for peer review.
Sends manuscripts back to author(s) for making changes based on recommendations by peer reviewers.
Completes final editing on the manuscript.
Notifies author(s) if manuscript is accepted or rejected for publication in the Science Educator.
Identifies a printer for the Journal
Collaborates with the printer to see that the Journal is published in a quality fashion and on an established schedule.
Mails copies of the Journal to association committee members.
Prepares a mass mailing of the journal to Association membership.
Prepares a final report for the Association annual meeting.
Sourcebook Chair:
Identifies appropriate topics and chapter titles for the Sourcebook.
Prepares a call for manuscripts for the Sourcebook.
Prepares manuscript guidelines for potential authors.
Publishes manuscript guidelines and the call for manuscripts in the Association Newsletter.
Disseminates manuscript guidelines and the call for manuscripts at NSTA conventions.
Identifies the Editorial Board for the Sourcebook.
Receives and processes all manuscripts for the Sourcebook.

The Navigator Newsletter Editor
Appointed by Executive Board annually.
Major function or purpose of office:
Develops, designs, and writes the Association's official newsletter so that it communicates information, issues, and concerns that are pertinent to its members. Works closely with President and Executive Director to accomplish these tasks.
Other Duties:
Serves as a member of the Executive Committee.
Produces up to four issues of the Association Newsletter per year; types and edits copy, does layout, arranges for printing and mailing.
Appoints associate editors, if needed, to provide assistance in publishing the newsletter.
Works with the Association President and Executive Director in publishing the newsletter.
Solicits assistance from the Executive Committee to communicate information issues, and concerns to members of the Association through the newsletter.
Develops procedures to solicit advertisements to financially support the newsletter.
Assist Executive Committee members in securing advertising for publications distributed to the membership.
Assists the President and Executive Director in publishing and mailing other special publications, as requested.
Ensures that each issue of the newsletter is carefully edited for accuracy, and is printed and mailed in the most economical manner possible.
Conducts other duties as outlined in the Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws of the Association.
Timeline:
March/April (at NSTA National Conference):
Editor and Executive Board agree on publishing dates for quarterly newsletters. Also agree on number of pages per issue and advertising rates..
Budget is appropriated, based on the number of manuscript pages and number of recipients.
Publicize dates for the upcoming year's newsletter issues.
4 - 6 weeks before target date: Request manuscript submissions from NSELA Executive Board members, NSTA, and other interested associations. Note specific due date and address for submissions.
4 weeks before target date: All submissions for newsletter are due.
3 weeks before target date: Bids are collected for printing and mailing.
2 - 4 weeks before target date: Newsletter is written and designed..
2 weeks before target date: Manuscript and photos/art are sent to printer.
4 days before target date: Newsletters are transferred to mailing service.
Target date: Newsletters are mailed.
