The History of The National Science Education Leadership Association
formerly The National Science Supervisors Associaion
By Robert Fariel
Chapter 4 Solutions to the Problems
James R. Wailes
1976-1977
As Jim Wailes took the reins as president for 1976 - 77, he set about to resolve the problems of the organization.
One of the first actions taken was the NSSA becoming an affiliate of the NSTA. This meant that the current president became a member of the NSTA Executive Board with voting rights.
The Sourcebook for Science Supervisors was revised and made available to the membership. A new editor took over the responsibility of the Newsletter. BAREX got a new chairperson. A membership Directory was published and sent to all members in July of 1975. Space was sold in the Newsletter for advertisements. A historian was appointed. Hues were increased from $4.00 to $6.00. The only sad note was the the NSF funds, despite the success of the Summer Leadership Institute and a campaign of letter writing, were no longer available.
Walter Knighton
1977-1978
Renewal of membership continued to negatively impact NSSA. For every new member, one was lost for lack of renewal. Membership numbers remained static.
Walter "Bud" Knighton conducted a survey of the membership for the purpose of finding out what services the members wanted. Thee survey indicated an expansion of services that already existed and a resumption of services previously provided.
Charles Butterfield
1978-1979
As Charles Butterfield took office as president, in 1968, he took the results of the survey and put them into action.
Robert Fariel was appointed Membership Chairperson on the condition that the Executive Board remove NSTA from handling NSSA memberships. This was promptly voted upon by the Executive Board. Membership was now handled by the Membership Chairperson and the Secretary-Treasurer. Mailing lists were placed on the computer and maintained by Jim Wail0es. This gave the organization immediate access to the membership.
The new membership chairperson outlined the services and activities that would be provided. They included award certificates for students, certificates of recognition, sources of information for science supervisors and special activities at the annual NSTA National Convention.
The first Regional Summer Leadership Institute was approved. If it was successful, it would be duplicated in another region of the country the following year.
Robert Dean
1979-1980
The Newsletter Editor and the Directory Editor promised new features of interest and a schedule of their publications.
A committee was formed for the purpose of regionalizing the Directors of the Executive Board. The new plan did not follow the NSTA plan. The logic behind this change was to equalize representation of supervisors.
The Regional Directors now were held responsible for recruiting new members, including renewal of membership. The Regional Directors were provided labels, materials to service their membership and a list of non-renewals.
Another committee was formed an named The Issues Committee. The function of this committee was to solicit problems that science supervisors were having in their various positions(See Figure 3 on pages 17 and 18.)
An Awards Committee was formed to develop the first national award. It was called "The Outstanding Science Supervisor Award." The award would be presented at the annual luncheon of AETS and the NSSA. The awards announcement is shown on the Awards link above:
